Not at all! Swimming with whale sharks is a very safe activity, even though it takes place in open water. You just need to follow these rules:
- Book legal and certified whale shark tours. Some fishermen offer cheaper tours, but they do not have permits, safety standards, or proper experience. This makes the trip dangerous for both the passengers and the whale sharks. Besides possible accidents, the best outcome in this situation is that the Port Authority takes the boat, and you lose your money.
- Do not touch the whale sharks. The danger is not that you will get hurt, but that you could ruin the experience. Whale sharks are very shy, so they may leave the area and not come back.
- Follow the guide. Captain Whale Shark always has a guide in the water to show you where to look and how to spot the whale sharks in the safest way.
